Day 298 - What Does your Label Say about Humanities Future?

tumblr_lohmvyUf7A1qbb77eo1_500_thumb What is it that defines who we are?

Name?

Clothing?

Beliefs?

Country?

When you look at someone what label do you define them as? Do you judge someone based on how they look or your perception of them? Or do see another as who they truly are? We label and judge ourselves and others.

We have created categories within ourselves where we can place the various labels of others and ourselves. The truth is that we cannot know who a person is until you actually take the time to know them. A simple example would be stereotypes – Many people look at Muslims and label them terrorist. Look at foreigners and label them Immigrants in a hateful way. And the problems that grow from identifying people based on our own misconceptions are creating so much suffering.

We label ourselves as superior, as more than others. We see ourselves as more important than other people. We look at nature and see ourselves the dominant species that has right to do with it as we please. Simply look at what this identity is doing to the earth.

So what is the Solution? How can we identify ourselves as equals? What will it take for us to stop labeling each other and other beings? It’s in the realization that firstly our labeling is born from misconception – how we judge others is not real. The person standing next to you IS you, there is nothing that makes that other person more than you or less than you. There is nothing that makes you better than that person or more deserving than another. It is recognizing that every person in this world – we are all equal.

Within realizing this it becomes common sense to give to another what you would like to receive. If you were that person how would you liked to be treated? To be labeled? To be judged? No.

It’s time we stop identifying ourselves as living in separate realities and to realize that we are all on the same boat.

Day 297: Why is Fear Never Real?

images Fear

Im going to start with a great Quote from the not so great Movie After Earth:

“Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity Kitai. Do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but fear is a choice.”

Fear is not real. Fear is a choice. Even though the movie in general was not so great I did enjoy it, because of its theme which is based on the point of fear and overcoming fear. And you can relate the fear to any fear – is never real, It’s always based on our minds and always based on the future and never based on what is actually physically here.

Why Fear is never real

Fear cannot be real because fear is something that we create in our own minds – we literally imagine it. The only place you can find fear is in the minds of those who choose to create it. It’s all future based. For example fear of heights: Some people totally freak out when looking down from a great height, the fear is falling and dying, but in the present moment all you are doing is looking down. The fear is created based on what is not actually here.

The way the father grounds his son in the Movie is also cool and very beneficial:

“Kitai, calm down. Take a knee. Root yourself in this present moment now. Sight, sound, smell.”

See, the fear and stress is created in our minds. It when we start thinking about the future and possible outcomes and all the uncertainties involved that the problem is created. We - for a moment – actually leave the present moment and get lost in our minds creating imaginary fear. So when this happens “ Take a knee” – meaning bring yourself back into the present moment that is here. Get yourself out of the mind and stop thinking. Look around you, breathe the air , listen to the environment – ground yourself in the present moment. You always want to be HERE in the present moment.

So stop creating fear – when you start fearing something what do you know? That You are not here in the moment. Fear is never real.

Day 296: This is what makes regret such a horrible thing

imageew What are you waiting for? What am I waiting for? The perfect time maybe, Or that sign and or something or someone to come along to say “ YES, this is the right time and you can stop waiting now”.

There are plenty of extremely unpleasant experiences we as humans can create within ourselves – and for me I would say one of the saddest would be regret. Regret is one of the things we cannot change, because it’s in the past. It is a moment or a choice or something we did that we cannot change and will have to live with it for the rest of our lives. Sure, you can change the experience and learn from it and try not to do the same in the future, but you still can’t change the past events.

That is what makes regret such a horrible thing – you can’t change the past. Our lives are moving forward towards an inevitable end, even though life is the longest thing we will experience we really have limited time on this earth. Look at your past and how fast it went by, it seems a decade went by in an instant. And as you get older you start looking at the words: should have, would have and could have.

Why is it that we first have to face regret to truly value the time we have on this earth and the importance of the present moment? There were so many times I wished I spoke up and said what I wanted to say. Or stand up for myself or another and say what I wanted to say. So many times where I could have made a choice that would bring a change to myself or another. But I did not, instead I told myself there is always tomorrow.

We have all experienced this throughout our lives, and it always feels like we realize this too late. But the point of this is to understand something simple which is that our lives have an expiry date. One day I will die, and one day you will die. We simply do not have time to wait and live with regret. One day it will be too late to change. There will never be a right time, there will never be a sign or someone who will come to say the time is right or that you are ready. YOU are the one who decides this. The right time is always now.

What are you waiting for?

Day 295: Day How Self-Judgement Of Singing Limits Your Life

images My whole life since playing music I always saw myself as unable to sing or rather not very good at it, even though I really liked singing. What I did do is only sing when I am alone by myself where I am the only one who can hear, but I never had the confidence to sing in front of others.

There comes a point in your life where you simply need to say" F**k it! I'm singing and don'’t care who listens". Recently I started working on some cover songs to practice my voice and since really pushing and practicing I have found that I became better at singing to a point where I can say that I am able to sing. So all I needed to do was to practice singing to become better at it. Now, I have been a musician for many years and it never occurred to me that I can actually sing – why is that?

The reason is simple, I carried a self-judgment about my voice and that belief of me not being able to sing is what kept me from developing my singing voice. It is like picking up a guitar for the first time and trying to play it – you are going to be bad at it, It will be silly to then judge yourself as being a bad player that will never be good at playing guitar. It takes dedication and practice to become good at any instrument and your Voice is simply another instrument.

That is something I missed – that my voice is simply another instrument and that I never took the time to practice and develop it to become better at singing. Instead I Judged myself as being bad at it the first time I tried. And thus I allowed a simple self-judgment to keep me from doing something I really like doing.

There so many points within ourselves that we judge. We carry so many self-judgments that are limiting us and keeping us from expanding ourselves. How many self-judgments do you have? Here was an example of one simple self-judgment that affected me for many years so imagine what all your self-judgments are doing to your life. Time to stop them and give them up and Live!

Day 294: #HoldACokeWithYourBoobsChallenge is now a thing

The Internet did it again. The  #HoldACokeWithYourBoobsChallenge is going viral. Woman taking selfies holding a can or bottle of coke with nothing but their boobs is apparently a bid to raise awareness of breast cancer. The irony here is quite thick, because those who had breast cancer and mastectomies will never be able to hold anything up.

Showing your Boobs and how much of it you have and your ability to hold up a can of coke is more like a slap in the face to those who had a mastectomy. Not to mention that coke itself is not a very healthy drink…

The reason this is getting so much attention is simple, very few men would not want to see a woman showing off her breasts. It’s the height of narcissism to post half-naked selfies for their own sake but it’s also pretty duplicitous to claim you’re doing it for a valiant reason.

Even the Breast cancer foundation had this in response:

“Breast Cancer Research Foundation does not support this campaign and we do not plan on accepting any donations from this campaign. Breast cancer is a serious global health issue that impacts millions of women and men around the world and we believe that breast cancer should not be trivialized.”

There is no problem with raising awareness for a cause or to help a cause, but the Boob challenge is not the way. Rather do something that will actually help. Many woman do not know how to check for lumps that could be a sign that’s its cancer. Instead of putting a coke between your breasts a better option would be to do an educational video on how to check for lumps or something like that. Unfortunately even that will become more about the sexual part ( BOOBS) than the actual educational part, but still would be better than what is currently going on.

To sum up – if you are going to do something for a cause make sure it will actually benefit and help the cause. The #HoldACokeWithYourBoobsChallenge is not helping anything, only narcissism…
